- How long has the firm been in business?
To serve client’s needs, the temporary help service must
have a large and diverse pool of qualified and available temporary staffers.
It takes time to build this kind of reserve.
- How does the service recruit and retain its staff?
A temporary staffing firm needs to attract and retain talented professionals.
In order to do this, the firm needs to be able to keep its employees
working and the firm needs to offer competitive wages and benefits such
as portable healthcare and paid time off.
- How are potential employees screened, tested and evaluated?
Ask what factors are evaluated during an in-person interview. For example,
are references checked and what tests are given to quantify skills?
- What is the experience of the account representative assigned
to your business?
It takes an experienced service person to know the inventory of available
employees and to make a good match. A firm that has long-term permanent
employees is likely to be more stable and therefore, more consistent
when making assignments.
- Does the temporary service carry workers compensation, liability
insurance, errors and omissions insurance and a fidelity bond?
The service should carry adequate insurance. It not only protects you,
it protects them.
- What kind of performance guarantee does the service offer?
You should know what your recourse is if you are dissatisfied with a
temporary worker. You’ll want to know if the temporary can be
replaced if you are not satisfied and whether charges will be canceled
or other consideration offered.
- What happens if you want to convert the temporary worker to
your payroll for direct hire?
There is likely to be a fee for converting the temporary staffer to
your payroll. Ask what discounts can be applied.
- What references can the firm offer?
If you ask, the staffing firm should be able to provide references from
satisfied customers. Then check references. Ask specifically: Does the
temporary employee usually complete the assignment? Can you rely on
the staffing firm to respond to last-minute requests or after-hour emergencies?
Does the staffing firm provide prompt confirmation of an order, including
the name of the temporary employee? And finally, does the staffing firm
provide a firm rate quote?
